The Zambia Association of Musicians has announced a new policy, which has since stirred social media debate. According to an update by Singer and producer Roberto, only fully Paid up and registered artists will be allowed to have music gigs and ultimately be hired for shows.
This has not sat well with many Zambian artists as they question the legality of this new rule. Artists like Bobby East also feel ZAM shouldn’t threaten the people who are supposed to give them money and suggested their was need for sensitizing.
Many other people feel ZAM should clearly explain the benefit of paying the K300 membership fee and also how the money will be utilized for the sake of transparency. ZAM has also not highlighted how they intend to enforce new policy.
Over the years, ZAM has been criticized for being docile when it comes to advocating for the welfare of artists. In fact the association has been accused of only being active when a Musician dies.
