In a significant move to explore the role of creative arts in shaping the future of Zambian youth both at home and in the diaspora, Thandi Chirwa, a U.S.-accredited media anchor for Channel A TV, was warmly received by the Zambian Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Chibamba Kanyama. The visit marked Thandi’s first to the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Washington, D.C., where she engaged in pivotal discussions with the Ambassador on the impact of digital media, fashion, and music on the next generation.

Thandi Chirwa, a dynamic young professional and a double major student in business, media, and broadcasting, has established herself as a prominent figure in the media landscape through her work at Channel A TV. Her visit to the embassy was more than a mere diplomatic courtesy—it was a crucial step towards fostering stronger ties between Zambia and its diaspora, particularly in empowering young Zambians through the creative arts.

During the meeting, Ambassador Kanyama addressed all of Thandi’s questions, drawing from his extensive experience not only as a diplomat but also as a former senior broadcaster and Director General of the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation. The discussions delved deep into how the creative arts can be harnessed to inspire and equip Zambian youth with the tools necessary to succeed in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Thandi’s appointment to this important dialogue was facilitated by her father, the Founder and C.E.O of Channel A TV, Davies Chirwa, whose Seattle-based media platform is dedicated to creating opportunities for underrepresented communities and bridging gaps in digital media marginalization.

Accompanying Thandi on this significant visit was her mother, Grace Maseko Chirwa, an esteemed international fashion designer. Together, they extended their heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Kanyama and the Embassy staff for their warm reception and for the opportunities they are creating for Zambian youth in the diaspora. Thandi acknowledged the importance of such engagements, expressing her desire to leverage the insights gained to enhance her work at Channel A TV and to further empower young creatives.

The meeting also provided a unique networking opportunity, as Ambassador Kanyama facilitated connections between Thandi and prominent Zambian legal professionals, including Mr. Dickson Jere and her uncle, Mr. Kafuka Mwiche. These connections underscored the Ambassador’s commitment to supporting young Zambians, both in the creative and professional spheres.

Thandi’s work at Channel A TV has already seen her cover major events such as the NFL Super Bowl, We Day, and various prestigious awards. Through these experiences, she has honed her skills as a media anchor and journalist, positioning herself as a role model for other young Zambians. Her next aspiration is to travel to Zambia, where she hopes to inspire and motivate other youths to pursue their dreams, just as she has done.

Thandi Chirwa’s visit to the Zambian Embassy in Washington, D.C., marks a significant milestone in her journey as a media professional and advocate for youth empowerment. As she continues to rise in her career, her commitment to uplifting Zambian youth and bridging the gap between the diaspora and their homeland remains at the forefront of her mission.
